SDCMS News You Can Use

TUESDAY, OCTOBER 5, 2021

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: The California Medical Association and the San Diego County Medical Association have strongly endorsed Gov. Newsom’s mandate that school children must be mandated once vaccines are approved for children. Dr. Sergio Flores, President of SDCMS, provided the following statement to local news media:

The San Diego County Medical Society supports Governor Newsom's vaccine mandate for school students. While children are less likely to get seriously ill from COVID, some do; and while most recover some go on to have long–term symptoms which can be debilitating. While avoiding COVID in children and staff themselves is important enough; family members who get sick or need to care for ill children miss work and this further impacts the health and security of families.

The American Academy of Pediatrics’ COVID–19 Guidance for Safe Schools recommends vaccination for all eligible individuals. Vaccination will keep kids, teachers, and their families healthy and thriving.

On September 22nd, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) granted emergency use authorization (EUA) for a booster dose of the Pfizer mRNA COVID vaccine for those 65 and older and those at high risk for severe illness from the coronavirus, including essential workers whose jobs increase their risk for infection — such as frontline healthcare workers.

According to the CDC and CDPH, the following groups should get a third dose of the Pfizer vaccine:
People aged 65 years and older
People aged 18 years and older in long–term care settings
People aged 50–64 years with underlying medical conditions

The following groups may receive a booster shot of the Pfizer vaccine, based on their individual benefits and risks:
People aged 18–49 years with underlying medical conditions
People aged 18–64 years at increased risk for COVID–19 exposure and transmission because of occupational institutional setting:
First Responders [healthcare workers, firefighters, police, congregate care staff]
Education Staff [teachers, support staff, daycare workers]
Food and Agriculture Workers
Manufacturing Workers
US Postal Service Workers
Grocery Store Workers
Public Transit Workers

Can people who got the Moderna or J&J vaccines get a booster shot?
At this time, the booster authorization only applies to people who got the Pfizer–BioNTech vaccine. More data on the effectiveness and safety of Moderna and J&J/Janssen booster shots are expected soon.

A final reminder that the CalVax Grant deadline has been extended until October 15th. Individual practices may receive up to $55,000 to support vaccination efforts, and to be eligible, practices must complete Section A of the myCAVax application process.

Small practice providers can apply to receive $10,000 for up to five vaccination sites for a total of $50,000. Additionally, small practice providers can receive an additional $1,000 per site (up to five sites for an additional $5,000) if their vaccination sites match high priority areas as noted by the CDPH.
