Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: Congratulations to SDCMS’ own President, Toluwalasé (Lasé) Ajayi, MD. Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins announced on International Women’s Day that Dr. Ajayi, is California Senate District 39’s Woman Making Herstory.

Every year in celebration of Women’s History Month, the Legislature has a tradition of celebrating women from each Senate and Assembly district “who are accomplishing amazing things in their communities.”

Senator Atkins’ office stated in part, “Dr. Ajayi is currently an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics at UC San Diego and Rady Children’s Hospital San Diego where she works as a hospitalist and pediatric palliative medicine physician. She serves as the Director of Diversity Initiatives, Director of Clinical Research, Assistant Professor of Molecular Medicine, and a Senior Staff Scientist in Digital Medicine at the Scripps Research Translational Institute. She is also the co–medical director of adult palliative medicine at Scripps Mercy Hospital San Diego.”

“Dr. Ajayi has a long history of leadership in policy–making and organized medicine at the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) and is an AAP delegate to the American Medical Association (AMA) where she advocates for the needs of children and those with serious illness. She is a former Chair of the AMA and CMA Young Physician Sections.”

CalHealthCares’ fifth application cycle is expected to award $64 million in educational debt relief to approximately 250 physicians and dentists committed to practicing with Medi–Cal communities. CalHealthCares is an important recruitment and retention tool for all modes of practice in underserved communities to ensure quality and equitable access to care.

Physicians for a Health California (PHC) requests volunteers from the medical and dental communities to review and score applications. Scorers will review applications online allowing the CalHealthCares advisory council to then make funding recommendations. Training and reference materials are available, and volunteers are asked sign a conflict–of–interest form prior to scoring for program documentation.

IMPORTANT DATES TO CONSIDER
MARCH 15 — VIRTUAL TRAINING SESSION
MARCH 20 THROUGH APRIL 7 — APPLICATION REVIEW PERIOD

If you are interested in serving as a CalHealthCares scorer, please email CalHealthCares@phcdocs.org and they will be in touch soon with additional details.

Please allow me to remind you that the County of San Diego’s Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program recently launched a quarterly newsletter focused on prescribers. You can access the newsletter if you CLICK HERE. In addition, the County of San Diego is asking that you please take about 10 minutes of your time to complete a needs assessment survey for the Countys OD2A grant. The purpose of this survey is to identify access to and use of California’s prescription drug monitoring program, CURES 2.0 (Controlled Substances Utilization Review and Evaluation System).

Your feedback will provide valuable insight into the use of the CURES system, particularly tools such as delegation, patient contracts, and messaging among licensed health care providers in San Diego County. Responses will remain confidential and will be grouped with those of other respondents for reporting. The deadline for completion has been extended to March 31, 2023. Please use the following link to complete complete the survey: TAKE SURVEY.

We would also like to strongly encourage you to participate in the Champions for Health and San Diego County Medical Society Gala, ‘Together We Rise’, this year, on Friday, May 12th, 2023, from 6–10pm, at the San Diego Natural History Museum at 1788 El Prado in San Diego. Champions for Health has been doing extensive and impressive work these past few years and they deserve your help to continue to aggressively serve San Diego County’s medically underserved residents.
