SDCMS News You Can Use

TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 28, 2023

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: Congratulations to Preeti S. Mehta, MD, appointed by Senator Toni Atkins to the Respiratory Care Board of California, which oversees the 44,000 Licensed Respiratory Care Practitioners (RCP) in the state. RCPs regularly perform critical lifesaving and life support procedures prescribed by physicians that affect major organ of the body. Patients may be suffering from lung cancer, emphysema, asthma, or cystic fibrosis, or may be premature infants whose lungs have not yet fully developed. Dr. Mehta also serves on the Board of SDCMS as our organization’s Treasurer and we are grateful for her public service.

The County of San Diego’s Overdose Data to Action (OD2A) program recently launched a quarterly newsletter focused on prescribers. You can access the newsletter if you CLICK HERE. In addition, the County of San Diego is asking that you please take about 10 minutes of your time to complete a needs assessment survey for the Countys OD2A grant. The purpose of this survey is to identify access to and use of California’s prescription drug monitoring program, CURES 2.0 (Controlled Substances Utilization Review and Evaluation System).

Your feedback will provide valuable insight into the use of the CURES system, particularly tools such as delegation, patient contracts, and messaging among licensed health care providers in San Diego County. Responses will remain confidential and will be grouped with those of other respondents for reporting. The deadline for completion has been extended to March 31, 2023. Please use the following link to complete complete the survey: TAKE SURVEY.

We would like to strongly encourage you to participate in the Champions for Health and San Diego County Medical Society Gala, ‘Together We Rise’, this year, on Friday, May 12th, 2023, from 6–10pm, at the San Diego Natural History Museum at 1788 El Prado in San Diego. Cocktail hour and a silent auction begin at 6pm and the formal dinner with honoree awards and entertainment begins at 7pm. Champions for Health has been doing extensive and impressive work these past few years and they deserve your help to continue to aggressively serve San Diego County’s medically underserved residents. For more information and to purchase tickets CLICK HERE.

Our thanks to San Diego County Medical Society Legislative Committee Chair, Robert Hertzka, MD, along with our Communications Committee Chair, Holly B. Yang, MD, for leading a delegation of San Diego medical students to meet with our County’s legislators in Sacramento. This is only the second time in three years students have been able to meet with legislators in person.

The students had a great trip, meeting with Senator Catherine Blakespear as well as San Diego Assembly Members, Akilah Weber, MD, Tasha Boerner Horvath, and Chris Ward, plus Senator and Senate President Pro Tem Toni Atkins. These visits are advantageous for both our medical students and the elected leaders who get to hear firsthand from these bright young people on the realities and challenges of going into medicine.
