Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: SDCMS, in partnership with the California Medical Association, Altais, State of California and the Governor’s Office, held a hugely successful PPE distribution event at SDCCU Stadium to small and medium sized physician practices. Almost 800 local practices received 2 months of free PPE, worth $3.8 million, over 2 days. If your practice has fewer than 50 providers and didn’t participate in the distribution event, you can email ppe@cmadocs.org to find out about future distribution of free PPE.

This event was a massive logistical undertaking and I’d like to thank our President, Dr. Holly Yang, former President, Dr. Dave Bazzo, and the family of Dr. Will Tseng — his wife Angela Shiau and their children — for all the time and assistance they provided to make it a success. Much thanks also to the coaches and players of Mira Mesa High School’s football team who volunteered to load the heavy supplies into vehicles and the UCSD medical students who helped process arriving recipients.

I’d also like to thank the SDCMS staff who spent two full days at SDCCU Stadium and many more beforehand preparing — Jennipher Ohmstede, Brandon Ethridge along with his husband Stephen Hutson, Hanna Basler, and Sue Fledderjohn. They went above and beyond and did a terrific job!

A reminder that Champions for Health, our non–profit which provides medical services for San Diego County’s underserved communities, has made its Annual Sunset 5K fundraiser a virtual event this year due to COVID–19. The final day of this virtual event is fast approachingAugust 22ndand we hope you’ll support them by participating in this event. Champions does important and necessary work and they need your help more than ever in these difficult times. A person can participate at any point, at anytime, anywhere, using any method (walk, run, treadmill, swim, skateboard, etc.), and with a pet to make things even more fun. Finally, the course directors for the Clinical Foundation course at UCSD School of Medicine for first and second year medical students are actively recruiting physician volunteers who would be willing to host a medical student. Students learn the practice of medicine including how to take a history, perform a physical exam, and develop clinical reasoning skills. One aspect of this course is Ambulatory Care Apprenticeship (ACA), in which students are paired with a physician and work with them in clinic 5 or 6 afternoons (1–5pm) a quarter. The apprenticeship begins during the Winter quarter for first year medical students and then continues through the end of Fall quarter during their second year. If you are interested and/or if you would like more information, please reach out to the coordinator, Eddie Zatarain (fzatarain@ucsd.edu).

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
