Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: The California Medical Association and SDCMS are urging all physicians to contact Gov. Newsom and tell him to veto dangerous legislation, AB 890 the Nurse Practitioner Scope bill, and protect patient safety. This bill would undermine physician–led care and could create a lower tier of care for low–income patients in particular. We are strongly opposed to AB 890, which would give nurse practitioners (NPs) the ability to practice independently without standard safeguards in place.

In unexpected news, the State of California is conducting a brief but open search for the next Director of the Department of Public Health/State Public Health Officer. The deadline is Sept. 15th. CLICK HERE for more information.

We need to inform you that for the first time in 15 years, SDCMS DID NOT conduct the selection process for San Diego Magazine’s Top Docs. Instead the magazine changed the process and hired a national firm to make the selections rather than relying on community selections. So please understand that SDCMS had no role in the selection process for this year’s Top Docs.

Dr. Holly B. Yang, our SDCMS President, recently delivered the White Coat speech to incoming medical students at UCSD School of Medicine. You can see a video of the full speech [WATCH HERE]. Her words are particularly meaningful for all of us involved in medicine today. In a key passage from her remarks, Dr. Yang declared,

“By entering medical school and putting on your white coat, you are now a part of and represent our profession. Your words and actions reflect on medicine as a whole. Whether the public sees us as trustworthy or not. Whether we are viewed as compassionate or not. Whether someone feels that they are seen and heard and treated fairly or not. With this title comes privilege and responsibility. You are joining our community when there is rightly an increased awareness of our past and current failures in treating all people equally, and I hope you will embrace helping us to create a more just health care system and world. I know you are bringing your best selves, and so I have great hope.”

Finally, American Medical Response is generously sponsoring complimentary admission to the San Diego Museum of Art for first responders and frontline works from September 5 — November 14, 2020. For more details CLICK HERE.

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
