Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: We are asking all physicians to contact their Representative in Congress and urge them to cosponsor the California Medical Association bill, HR 1133, the “Stopping Doctor Shortages Act.” This bill makes a technical fix to ensure that all California and Texas physicians can participate in the federal Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness Program. Due to an error in the implementing regulation, most California and Texas physicians cannot receive loan forgiveness like their colleagues in all other 48 states. It is harming California’s ability to recruit and retain new physicians to meet the growing patient needs for more physicians. More information is HERE.

In terms of the San Diego County congressional delegation, Congressman Issa is already a cosponsor. Please be sure to thank him. Congressmembers Sara Jacobs, Mike Levin, Scott Peters and Juan Vargas are yet to sign on so please REACH OUT to their offices and urge them to cosponsor this important legislation.

UCSD Moores Cancer Centers HPV Vaccination Call to Action Report has been released and this document condenses the findings from their environmental scan of San Diego County’s HPV vaccination landscape into a clear guide for three key stakeholder groups: clinicians, pharmacists, and school–based health officials. I encourage all physicians to review this informative and helpful report HERE.

Dr. Steven Eisenberg, SDCMS Member and distinguished Oncologist, has just released a book called Love is the Strongest Medicine: Notes from a Cancer Doctor on Connection, Creativity and Compassion. Dr. Eisenberg is a leading advocate for improving patient engagement and the central importance of empathy in treatment. His insights, experiences, and unique approach are worthy of a read even for those of us who are veterans in health care. You can purchase a copy HERE.

Finally, May the Fourth Be With You!

As always, let me know if you have any questions. Paul Hegyi, CEO
