If you haven't voted yet, be sure to do so. SDCMS will be closely monitoring results for Congress, the state legislature and the San Diego County Board of Supervisors. In fact, 2020 is going to be an election of exceptional importance to California physicians and their patients as a new initiative measure dramatically weakening MICRA is expected to qualify for this November's ballot. It will be another two to three months before this measure officially qualifies and is assigned a ballot number but its qualification is a certainty. This issue was a major focus at the SDCMS Board Retreat the other weekend. The Board voted to put SDCMS on record against this new MICRA initiative. Doctors spent time planning physician outreach and education efforts to counter the MICRA measure. The California Medical Association and the San Diego County Medical Society are making defeating this incredibly dangerous measure our top priority for the year! This new MICRA ballot measure, pushed by an out-of-state trial lawyer, is exponentially worse than the most recent attempt —6 years ago— to weaken MICRA. We encourage physicians, health care organizations and other medically involved entities to go on record against the new MICRA initiative.
