San Diego County Medical Society
TUESDAY, JUNE 30, 2020

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: The San Diego County Medical Society took strong action last week after our County Public Health Officer, Dr. Wilma Wooten, was publicly abused, insulted and doxed by having her home address announced at a televised and on–line Board of Supervisors meeting by a member of the public. We were particularly disappointed that no Member of the Board of Supervisors spoke out against this behavior or attempted to initially defend Dr. Wooten. As you know, Public Health Officers across California and the nation have become targets of abuse and intimidation during this pandemic. It is simply not acceptable to allow this to happen in San Diego County and we went public to the Board of Supervisors with our strong concerns and frustrations over this incident. Channel 10 News made our efforts to defend Dr. Wooten their lead story which you can view if you CLICK HERE.

We are gratified that the Members of the Board of Supervisors have since assured us of their support for, and confidence in, Dr. Wooten. But we believe it is important to not let up in demonstrating support for Dr. Wooten. SDCMS has begun a social media campaign on Twitter with physicians and other health care professionals showing support for wearing masks and Dr. Wooten using the hashtag #ISupportMyPHO. Please #WearAMaskSaveALife.

If you haven't already, please send us a selfie of you wearing a mask with a sign that says:
  1. “I support Public Health Officer, Dr. Wooten. Wear a mask. Save a life.”
  2. “Wear a mask. Save a life.”
Or some version of your own. Please email your selfies to SDCMS@SDCMS.org. If you are on Twitter or Facebook, please be sure to follow us.

Champions for Health, our non–profit which provides medical services for San Diego's underserved communities, has made its Annual Sunset 5K fundraiser a virtual event this year due to COVID–19. Champions does important and necessary work and we hope you'll support them by participating in this event. It is now open for registration from June 20–August 22. A person can participate at any point during those 2 months, anywhere, using any method (walk, run, swim, treadmill, skateboard, etc.), and with a pet to make things fun. The Champions staff is encouraging people to complete the 5K at low tide near sunset (dates and times are on Champions' 5K website.) For more information and to register CLICK HERE.

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
