Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: Last week’s vote by Congress for the so–called ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ is anything but. Congress’ decision to cut Medicaid over the fervent objections of America’s medical community — with the California Medical Association and the San Diego County Medical Society in the thick of efforts to defeat these cuts — means that access to health care is threatened for millions of Americans.

These cuts will be devastating and impact the most vulnerable — seniors, children, people with disabilities and low–income families.

Hospitals will close, clinics will cut staff, and emergency rooms will be even more over–crowded. The safety net is dramatically weakened.

This is not the end but the beginning of a new fight to hold our elected officials accountable. Our fight for access and equity in health care continues on. California Medical Association and San Diego County Medical Society will remain in the thick of that fight — aggressively advocating for patients and physicians.

SAN DIEGO HAS LOST A GIANT | DR. DAVE BAZZO HAS PASSED

The California and San Diego medical communities have lost an extraordinary physician leader. David EJ Bazzo, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM, succumbed to brain cancer after a two–year battle. Dave has served as President of San Diego County Medical Society, President of San Diego Academy of Family Physicians and President of California Academy of Family Physicians.

But Dave was so much more than his titles. Dave was highly–respected and well–liked by all who knew him. He was an outstanding clinician, educator, leader and advocate. Above all else, he was an outstanding human being.

Dr. David Bazzo

DAVID EJ BAZZO, MD, FAAFP, CAQSM

Dr. Bazzo taught medical students and physician trainees as a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine at UCSD. He also helped physicians through his many roles, including Director of the UCSD Physician Assessment and Clinical Education (PACE) Program and Chief Medical Officer of the Physician Retraining and Re–Entry Program. He was one of the nation’s leading advocates and experts on physician wellness.

Dr. Holly Yang has prepared a beautiful tribute to Dave which will appear in the next San Diego Physician Magazine. I hope you’ll read the story of the life of this exceptional man when it comes out. Dave will be deeply missed by many. Our thoughts and prayers are with his wife, Sabrina, and their daughters.
