WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 24, 2024 PHYSICIANS: It is with sadness that I share Paul K . Raffer , MD has passed at the age of 76 after a courageous battle with cancer. Dr. Raffer was not only a distinguished former leader for San Diego County Medical Society but earned a reputation as a knowledgeable and compassionate physician. He had a solo private practice for decades in Chula Vista. He was also a talented musician and singer, which he enjoyed sharing at community events. Dr. Raffer was predeceased by his wife Donna. He is survived by his four daughters and sons–in–law and his grandchildren. We extend our sympathies to his family. IN THE LONG TRADITION OF MEDICAL ORCHESTRAS, A SAN DIEGO PHYSICIANS ORCHESTRA IS BEING ORGANIZED. ARE YOU INTERESTED? This next item falls under the category of physician wellness. It has been said that physicians likely have the greatest participation in music than any other professional group. There are currently 38 medical orchestras in the United States, with most of them located east of the Mississippi. The lone medical orchestra in California is presently at Stanford. A new initiative underway seeks to create a San Diego Physician Chamber Orchestra. David M . Steinhorn , MD , FAAP is beginning the process of recruiting interested physician musicians or medical and nursing school faculty. Rehearsals will take place every two weeks at a central location currently under negotiation. As a chamber orchestra, the initial membership will be 24–30 members with pairs of winds, percussions, keyboard and the balance strings. Please spread the word and contact Dr. Steinhorn with any questions at SDMedicalOrchestra@gmail.com . Interested musicians should include a brief description of their musical background including instrument, self–rated playing level, and contact information.
