SDCMS News You Can Use

TUESDAY, JANUARY 18, 2022

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS: It’s that time of year when annual SDCMS–CMA dues are, in fact, due!! I’m proud to say that SDCMS worked harder than ever on behalf of our members during this unprecedented pandemic. Countless hours were spent securing PPE for physicians, compiling critical resources, and securing vaccines for physicians and their staff that weren’t a part of the initial wave. We realized that the pandemic has had different effects on all our practices in San Diego and worked to assist in every possible way we could.

This year we face yet another challenge to MICRA, the critical malpractice protection law we have here in California, this time put on the ballot by a single, greedy trial lawyer. We will need every physician to be a member so we are best prepared to beat back this challenge. If your renewal fell through the cracks please CLICK HERE or call SDCMS at (858) 565–8888 to immediately reactivate your membership.

A blood supply shortage is threatening local medical care. Both the San Diego Blood Bank and the local American Red Cross have put out broad calls for volunteers to make donations as soon as possible (appointments are encouraged but not required). You can also reach out to the Blood Bank’s recruitment department or call (619) 400–8124 if your business is interested in hosting a mobile blood drive.

The UCSD Clarke Center for Human Imagination and Swartz Center for Computational Neuroscience are seeking volunteers for a study on using auditory and virtual reality methods to boost a training shown to increase mindfulness and compassion and reduce stress and burnout in healthcare providers.

Participants will join an 8–week, 16–hour training (online) of 2 hours per week. They will also attend 2 lab sessions while being measured with non–invasive electroencephalographic (EEG), heart rate, and skin measures, and complete questionnaires. There is no compensation, and you will receive free training along with CE’s for eligible healthcare professionals.

Online training will take place either Tuesday or Wednesday evenings from 5–7 pm beginning on February 1st or 2nd. While the trainings take place online, the lab sessions will be conducted in person using strict COVID protocols. If interested contact info@imagination.ucsd.edu for more information, or complete this eligibility form.

The County of San Diego, San Diego County Medical Society, and Hospital Association of San Diego & Imperial Counties are hosting a Clinical Town Hall about the COVID–19 pandemic. These virtual sessions are designed by physicians, for physicians to share timely information and discuss issues specific to medical professionals.

According to CMS plans announced Tuesday, the proposed CMS National Coverage Determination (NCD) would cover approved monoclonal antibodies targeting amyloid through coverage with evidence development (CED). To date, the only such approved treatment is aducanumab, and the move from CMS would sharply limit the number of beneficiaries eligible for the pricey therapy. CLICK HERE for more information.

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
