The next application cycle of the CalHealthCares Loan Repayment Program opens January 18, 2023. CalHealthCares provides loan repayment on educational debt for California physicians and dentists who provide care to Medi–Cal patients.

Eligible physicians can apply for a loan repayment award of up to $300,000 in exchange for a five–year service obligation. Eligible dentists can apply for a loan repayment award of up to $300,000 in exchange for a five–year service obligation or a Practice Support Grant of up to $300,000 in exchange for a 10–year service obligation. The program is funded by Proposition 56 (2016) voter–approved, state tax revenues.

The application window runs from January 18 through March 3, 2023.

Applicants are encouraged to submit their applications during the early review period, from January 18 – February 3, 2023. The early review period will give applicants the opportunity to receive feedback from CalHealthCares staff regarding any problems with their applications and will be able to resubmit their applications with amendments.

To assist prospective applicants with the application process, CalHealthCares will host webinars to walk interested applicants through the process. Information will include an overview of the application, important timelines, common errors, and the application scoring system. The webinars conclude with a live question and answer session.

Visit CalHealthCares.org for more information and additional resources, including application instructions, FAQS, and other information and forms needed to apply.

A reminder that there is an urgent need for blood donations, as San Diego’s blood supply is critically low and the San Diego Blood Bank is experiencing supply chain challenges.

To be eligible to donate blood you must be at least 17 years old, weigh at least 114 pounds and be in general good health. Appointments are encouraged and available at SDBB by visiting sandiegobloodbank.org or by calling (619) 400–8251. Walk–ins are also welcome.

The California Legislature has passed dozens of bills that are now affecting a wide variety of issues that impact physicians and health care in California — from abortion to cannabis to COVID–19 — and from health care plans and coverage to Medi–Cal to dispensing drugs to professional liability and telehealth, and countless other policy areas. It’s important to update yourself on these new laws.

California Medical Association has done a great job creating a comprehensive document that lists relevant new laws and provides a succinct explanation of each one. You can access that on the CMA website HERE. In addition, CMA is sponsoring a Free Webinar for Members on January 24th from 12:15 to 1:15pm on ‘New Laws Affecting Physicians 2023’ with CMA’s Senior Legal Counsel. You can REGISTER HERE for that webinar. I encourage you to participate.

As always, let me know if you have any questions! Paul Hegyi, CEO
