San Diego County Medical Society
TUESDAY, AUGUST 13, 2019

Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS:  As the CAHAN Alert below indicates, we have recently seen the first case of measles in San Diego County in 2019. This is a powerful reminder of the importance of vaccines to protect the public health. The Legislature returns this month and is expected to advance SB 276, legislation by Senator and physician Richard Pan to limit the abuse of vaccine exemptions by a small number of doctors.

The San Diego County Medical Society and the California Medical Association strongly support this bill as another step forward to securing the public health. In the meantime, it is important that we remain vigilant against ignorance and misinformation spread by a small but militant group who are motivated by fear rather than science and who would endanger our public health by their embrace of voodoo superstitions over medicine.

The importance of public policy to medicine and public health can't be overstated. As part of determining the public policies that affect our daily lives, it is vital that the districts California's state legislators and Members of Congress represent not be gerrymandered and distorted by partisan or special interest agendas.

To that end, applicants are being sought for California's Redistricting Commission with the deadline fast approaching on August 19th. Democrats, Republicans and Independents all serve on this non-partisan and independent panel to draw the lines for California's legislative districts. People of color are particularly encouraged to apply to ensure diverse representation on the Commission. To get more information, please CLICK HERE. To find out whether you are eligible CLICK HERE.

As always, let me know if you have any questions!  Paul Hegyi, CEO
