Urge Your Assemblymember to Oppose Dangerous Optometrist Scope Expansion

A bill (SB 492, Hernandez) that would allow optometrists to examine, prevent, diagnose, and treat any disease, condition, or disorder of the visual system, the human eye, and adjacent related structures will be heard in the Assembly Business, Professions and Consumer Protection Committee next week.

This bill would allow optometrists the ability to do delicate eye surgery with lasers and scalpels and to inject medications after minimal additional experience and an undefined amount of additional classroom work. The proposed expansion in the scope of services that could be provided by an optometrist is so broad that it could place patients at risk of significant harm from having medical conditions diagnosed and treated by practitioners who lack the education, training, and experience to safely provide primary medical care.

The California Medical Association is working with the California Academy of Eye Physicians and Surgeons to derail this dangerous bill, but we need your help!

Though the exact hearing date has not yet been set, SB 492 could be heard in committee as early as Tuesday, June 24.

Your assemblymember, who sits on the committee, needs to hear from you before then. We ask that you and your colleagues CALL, EMAIL, or FAX your legislators and urge them to oppose SB 492!

Call CMA's Legislator Connect Hotline, (877) 362-8455, to be connected with your legislator.
