Senate Votes to Stop the 24% Medicare SGR Payment Cut

Tonight (Monday) the Senate voted 64–35 to adopt HR 4302, the 17th patch to stop the 24% Medicare SGR payment cut for one year until April 2015. The cut was scheduled to take effect tomorrow. The House approved the same bill last week. It will now move to the president’s desk where we expect a signature. MICRA Signatures Submitted, Physicians Must Rally to Oppose Trial Lawyers on All Fronts

On Monday, March 24, Consumer Watchdog, a front group for the Consumer Attorneys of California, submitted roughly 830,000 signatures to qualify a measure for the November ballot that would scrap key provisions California’s Medical Injury Compensation Reform Act (MICRA). This deceptive measure will raise healthcare costs for all Californians by lifting MICRA’s cap on non-economic damages, thus increasing lawsuits against healthcare providers and decreasing access to care for patients across the state. Effective April 1, 2014, the California Department of Health Care Services (DHCS) and the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) will be rolling out Cal MediConnect, a new program to coordinate care for some of San Diego’s most vulnerable patients. Wound Botulism Associated With Drug Injection

Date: March 21, 2014 Since March 1, 2014, two highly suspect cases of wound botulism associated with black tar heroin injection have been reported in San Diego County. The two hospitalized cases are apparently unknown to each other and presented with wound infections and a recent history of skin popping black tar heroin. Other symptoms included diplopia, bilateral ptosis, bilateral extraocular palsy, slurred speech, and generalized weakness. New Measles Case Confirmed in San Diego

Date: March 12, 2014 Another San Diego resident was confirmed to have measles after being exposed to an ill individual who returned from a recent trip to the Philippines.
