Prescription for Obesity

Pediatric healthcare providers in San Diego County have a new tool in their fight against childhood obesity: a comprehensive, countywide database of programs and services that address the various aspects of obesity, including diabetes, nutrition, physical activity, and healthy weight. The database, housed at 211 San Diego, allows free access to information about everything from clinical programs and interventions, diabetes and nutrition education, and neighborhood parks, to recreation programs and services.

The Dual Epidemics

November is National Diabetes Awareness Month. Obesity and Type 2 diabetes mellitus, two major causes of morbidity and mortality, are growing public health threats in our communities today. Perhaps even more alarming, obesity and type 2 diabetes are becoming public health threats for our children as well.

Taking It out of the Office

“Is every kid I see today going to be obese?” a frustrated colleague asks me. “I feel like that’s all I’m seeing in the office!” Whatever your specialty and wherever your practice, whether you see children or their grandparents, chances are you’re seeing your patients get heavier. In Chula Vista as in other communities, underserved patients present to their doctors not only with high rates of obesity, but also shouldering the highest burden of preventable diseases such as diabetes and hypertension.
