End-of-life Care Events

The recent publicity about the last days of Terry Schiavo and Pope John Paul II has raised end-of-life care to the visibility level of the evening news. It is likely that there are very few families in San Diego County who haven’t exchanged at least a few words about the issues.

Dying Made Public

Dying should be a private process among the patient, family, physician and other health professionals. Words like “grave,” “guarded” and “serious” have been used to let other people know that the patient may not survive. The media, always curious about the death of famous people, would report the overall condition and tell stories of their lives but not usually the gory details of the dying process. Slow deaths may be well-managed and dignified but are not pretty in their details.

San Diego Bioethics Commission

The San Diego Bioethics Commission, chaired by Lynette Cederquist MD (USCD) and Paula Goodman-Crews LCSW (Kaiser Permanente), was developed within the San Diego County Medical Society (SDCMS) with a vision of bringing together San Diego County's medical community to develop standards in bioethics practices. Very few communities have organized such an effort! At this point in time, there is only one other bioethics commission in California of which we are aware, the Southern California Bioethics Consortium, based in Los Angeles.
