Have you discovered one of San Diego’s best resources for physicians? The Biomedical Library at UCSD provides access to the region’s largest collection of biomedical literature. It is one of ten libraries in the UCSD libraries system and is open to all visitors.

The Biomedical Library was established in 1963 near the School of Medicine campus. The library serves the School of Medicine, the Skaggs School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences, and the Division of Biological Sciences. The newly renovated and expanded library opened in August 2006. The state-of-the-art facility includes over 100 computers, 20 group study rooms, a late-night graduate study for graduate students, three training rooms, and seating for 800 users. We invite you to “connect, reflect, research, and discover” in this hidden resource.

Connect and Reflect: Designed to meet the needs of faculty, students, and researchers, the Biomedical Library offers spaces to connect with literature and colleagues. The new building provides ample space and lighting for research and reflection. Take advantage of large tables or comfortable chairs with ottomans. Group study rooms are available for groups of two or more people. A presentation practice room provides a private practice space with a computer, projector, screen, and timer — priority for the group study rooms and presentation practice room given to UCSD faculty, students, and staff.

Research and Discover: The Biomedical Library’s website — http://biomed.ucsd.edu — is a portal to biomedical information, including the library catalog, Roger (http://roger.ucsd.edu), article databases, thousands of e-journals and e-books, and library services. Access to these resources is available to anyone who comes to the library — UCSD faculty, staff, and students can also access these resources from off campus). The Online Clinical Library II — http://gort.ucsd.edu/clinlib/public/ — developed by the UCSD Medical Center Library, provides access to many clinically oriented resources that are freely available to the public.

Discover unexpected resources like the recreational reading collection that includes popular fiction, magazines, and newspapers. If you need help, librarians are available to provide expert research assistance in person, Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m., by phone, or online at http://biomed.ucsd.edu/ask/index.html for options.

Classes: The library offers many free classes to UCSD-affiliated faculty and students. PubMed classes are also open to San Diego-area physicians and clinical staff. Visit us online at http://biomed.ucsd.edu/services/instruc.htm for the current class schedule.

Visiting the Biomedical Library in person is easy. Parking is free on campus during weekends and holidays. Directions to the library are available at http://biomed.ucsd.edu/services/direct.htm. The library hours vary throughout the quarter to coincide with the academic calendar. For current hours, visit http://biomed.ucsd.edu/services/hours.htm.

We look forward to helping you connect, reflect, research and discover!
