CMA

Influence Legislation

Help Develop Relationships With Legislators:

  • SDCMS’ Legislative Committee Regularly Interviews San Diego County Candidates for Political Office
  • CalPAC (CMA’s Political Action Committee) Supports Candidates and Elected Officials Who Are Friendly to the House of Medicine
  • SDCMS Physician Leaders and Staff Regularly Travel to Sacramento and Washington, DC, to Meet With Legislators and Advocate on Physicians’ Behalf

Protect MICRA in the Legislature and the Courts:

  • Kept the Doors of Medicine Open Since 1975
  • Protected the Healthcare Safety Net in California
  • Kept Medical Malpractice Insurance Available and Affordable
  • CMA Supports Keeping the Cap on Non-economic Damages — One of Its Many Provisions — at $250,000
  • CMA Defended MICRA in 2012 Before the 5th Appellate District Count, Which Upheld the Constitutionality of MICRA’s Cap
  • A move by trial lawyers to undermine MICRA in 2012 was crushed by our short-term advocacy and our long-term pro-MICRA relationships with legislators.
  • CMA Defeated Prop. 46 in 2014!

Average MICRA Savings (VIS-À-VIS FL-NY-MI): $65,149:

Ensure Patient Care Is Not Jeopardized:

  • CMA Does Not Oppose All Expansions of Scope of Practice for Nonphysical Providers
  • Patient Care Must Not Be Jeopardized
  • Nonphysician Providers Must Not Exceed Their Experience, Training, and Education
  • The Physician Must Be the Final Decision Maker

Protect Access to Care for California’s Medi-Cal Patients

Maintain the Corporate Bar to the Practice of Medicine:

  • CMA Protects Patients and Preserves Physician Autonomy by Keeping Hospitals and Other Commercial Entities From Directly Hiring Physicians
  • CMA Ensures Clinical Decisions Are Not Dictated by Profit
