CMA Surveying Physicians to Better Understand Burnout and Professional Fulfillment

CMA Surveying Physicians to Better Understand Burnout and Professional Fulfillment

The California Medical Association’s (CMA) new Well Physician California (WPCA) initiative is conducting a longitudinal survey of California physicians across all modes of practice and specialties to better understand the landscape of physician burnout and professional fulfillment. Responses will guide future efforts to develop resources and interventions for the betterment of the medical profession and the care and well-being of patients. The statewide survey will begin in San Diego.

The survey consists of validated instruments that measure key aspects related to physician wellness. The questions are tailored to physicians and incorporate a broader view of wellness than just measures of burnout. Measured domains include:

  • Burnout
  • Professional fulfillment
  • Cognitive task load
  • Organizational leadership
  • Self-valuation (self-compassion)
  • Sleep-related impairment
  • Personal relationships

The 2019 survey period begins in San Diego on May 7. Invitations to participate will be sent via email and will include a personalized link. The survey takes about 10-12 minutes to complete. Your response is confidential and will be protected as described in the Survey Confidentiality Statement.

WPCA was created by CMA in response to increasing evidence of the scope and toll of physician burnout. WPCA’s approach is based on the expertise of physician wellness leaders Tait Shanafelt, M.D., and Mickey Trockel, M.D. WPCA aims to champion professional fulfillment of current and future physicians through comprehensive strategies that foster culture change, promote individual well-being and enhance the quality of patient care.

For more information on the WPCA survey, or if you are a San Diego physician and have not received an email but would like to participate, contact Scott Clark at sclark@cmanet.org or (916) 551-2569.
