Paul HegyiPHYSICIANS:  I’ve received concern from numerous members about letters they have received from the Medical Board in the past four months, requesting medical records for patients that died in 2012 and 2013.

Your SDCMS leadership and CMA are very concerned about these requests.  If you or a colleague has received a letter requesting medical records pursuant to this issue, please contact CMA so we can track the extent to which these letters are impacting our members.  Please note that the letters from the Medical Board contain personal health information and as such should not be circulated without redaction. Generally, it is enough for us to know the physician who has been contacted and we don’t need to see the letter with the patient’s information.  You can share the information with CMA’s legal help center at (800) 786-4262 or by e-mail using legalinfo@cmanet.org.  Further Medical Board assistance can be found at: http://www.cmanet.org/resources/medical-board-assistance/.

I also want to highlight the top story in “What to know”, an important piece about physician independence and what CMA is doing to protect the practice of medicine.  This case deals with the archaic Sheriff-Coroner system in California and Dr. Bennet Omalu, famous from his work discovering chronic traumatic encephalopathy in football players and popularized in the motion picture Concussion.

Finally, a hearty congratulations to our own State Senator Toni Atkins on her ascension to lead the California State Senate last week.  As President Sornson wrote, on behalf of the San Diego County Medical Society I would like to congratulate you on your ascension to California's Senate Pro Tem.  This is a historic day for you, for California and for San Diego.  More importantly, it shows the great respect you have from your colleagues.  We have valued our long-time relationship and look forward to working with you to tackle the critical issues facing health care in California."

As always, let me know if you have any questions!  Paul Hegyi, CEO
