SDCMS U-T Letter to the Editor — NURSE PRACTITIONER BILL DOES NOT EARN SUPPORT:
Regarding SB 323 on nurse practitioners’ scope of practice: State Sen. Ed Hernandez is again trying to change California law to allow untrained, unprepared, and already overworked nurse practitioners to practice medicine. When we talk about access to care, it’s equally if not more important to talk about the quality and safety of the care our patients receive. Shifting the burden of care from one profession to another is not the answer, especially when their scopes of training are vastly different. SB 323 does very little to address the training needed to ensure that nurse practitioners can perform medical procedures safely. It’s time we looked to solutions that have long-term impact, address the real problem and ensure that the people of California receive quality and safe medical care, not simply “expand it.”

“As long as anyone believes that his ideal and purpose is outside him, that it is above the clouds, in the past or in the future, he will go outside himself and seek fulfillment where it cannot be found. He will look for solutions and answers at every point except where they can be found — in himself.” — Erich Fromm, German Philosopher (1900–1980)
