The Leader’s Toolkit Workshop on Sept. 19–20: One of the benefits of SDCMS membership is leadership training for young or prospective physician leaders. We have developed an incredibly well-received day-and-a-half seminar for members called “The Leader’s Toolkit.” If you are an SDCMS member and interested in learning an awful lot about leadership and management in a very short period of time, then email me at Gehring@SDCMS.org to reserve a spot at the next seminar — scheduled for Saturday, September 19 and the morning of Sunday, September 20. We limit seminar size to 16 participants, so first come first served.

Physicians & Office Managers: What’s the Temperature of Your Medical Practice Right Now? In an effort to monitor and address the issues affecting you, San Diego County physicians and office managers, tell us what SINGLE issue you are MOST concerned about this very moment (e.g., Medi-Cal payments, patient vaccinations, paying my staff, EHRs, paperwork, etc.). Click here to let SDCMS know and to enter a chance to win a $20 Starbucks gift card. We will share the results in our next issue of “News You Can Use.”

Scope of Practice Legislative Victory! On July 14, without enough votes, Senator Hernandez pulled both his scope expansion bills (SB 323, expanding nurse practitioners to independent practice, and SB 622, giving optometrists the ability to do ophthalmologic surgery). Thanks principally to CMA advocacy, they are both defeated!

Tobacco Legislation Introduced: On July 16 a package of bills relating to tobacco control was introduced in the Legislature’s special session. Click here to read CMA’s press release on the bills — issued in conjunction with the Save Lives California coalition.

ICD-10

CMS Announces Changes to Make Medicare ICD-10 Transition Less Disruptive for Physicians: CMS will provide a one-year grace period during which it will allow for flexibility in the claims payment, auditing, and quality reporting processes as the medical community gains experience using the new ICD-10 code set. The October 1, 2015, ICD-10 implementation date has not changed! Medicare claims processing systems will not have the capability to accept ICD-9 codes for dates of services after September 30, 2015, nor will they be able to accept claims for both ICD-9 and ICD-10 codes.
