QUESTION #850: Can we bill the patient separately for the supplies from a minor surgical procedure due to the fact that Blue Cross, which with we are contracted, does not pay for them?

ANSWER (02/26/2009): No. If you are contracted with Blue Cross, you can only collect co-pay/deductibles. You can also bill the patient for non-covered services as long as the patient has signed a release of financial responsibility. However, medical supplies are considered inclusive of the service. You would be in breach of contract if you billed the patient. If you believe you were underpaid for the service, contact Blue Cross in an effort to renegotiate the rates so that your costs are covered.
